Who Really Owns Your Router?

Your router is the device that provides connectivity between your local network and the Internet. Without it you couldn’t browse the Internet, receive or send email or download files. It is a critical network device that is usually forgotten in a closest, because for the most part it just operates properly. The router’s obscurity is compounded by the fact the overwhelming majority of routers are supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) when the Internet circuit is installed. This applies to T1, Fractional T1, DSL, Cable, Leased Lines and other circuits.

This leads to the issue of ownership. ISP’s don’t do a good job of informing their clients who is responsible for the router they supply if it fails. In most cases you, the client, are responsible for the maintenance and/or replacement of the router if problems occur. It would behoove you to verify with your ISP who is responsible for the router when it fails. Routers aren’t like workstations that can be readily replaced, so proper preparation is required to address this issue. Remember if your router fails it means NO EMAIL OR INTERNET ACCESS!!

Ms. Malott continued, “One of the decisions we made for the move was to convert from a Novell platform utilizing GroupWise for email to a complete Windows environment utilizing Microsoft Outlook.  The conversion was a major undertaking, which MTBW coordinated and completed flawlessly.”
